The Burning Project ( La Quema) a performance that took place on October 5th, 2024 in San Pedro Fiz de Vilar, Ourense Spain. A project curated by Mateo Feijoo. The project involved the burning of my early paintingsfrom the 7o’s and 80’s after the paintings had been installed for eight months in the households, stables and working spaces of this village’s farmers. The intention is to create new works out of the destruction, the outcome of a learning experience after my twenty year project The Archive of Dust around the recuperation of my destroyed works after 9/11
Partial view: installation for The Burning Project ( La Quema) at the Museum of Anthropology in Madrid, 2026, a project curated by Mateo Feijoo. This space hosts a series of assemblages in which paintings created by Elena del Rivero during the 1980s and 1990s coexist with objects given by neighbors during the artist’s stays in the village of San Pedro Fiz de Vilar. They also coexist with fragments extracted from installations created by Elena in collaboration with the inhabitants of the place. De lo Divino y lo humano (Of the Divine and the Human), a sculptural piece placed on a dry-stone wall, reminds us of the fragility of the world we inhabit, where gilded honeycombs rise in search of the spiritual, while chains and the sound of the small bells hanging from them anchor us to the earth
